How to Price Garage Sale Items (Using Real Comparable Values)

Pricing is the single biggest lever you control at a garage sale. Price everything too high and it sits untouched all morning; price with no logic and you hand money away. The good news: you don't have to guess. You can price the same way resellers and appraisers do — using comparable values, or "comps." This guide goes deeper than the overview in the main guide, with a repeatable method and real category-by-category ranges.
What a "comp" actually is
A comp is what a similar item, in similar condition, actually sold for. Two words in that sentence do all the work:
- Sold, not asking. An item listed for $40 that has sat unsold for three months is not worth $40 — it's worth whatever someone eventually pays. Asking prices are hopes; sold prices are facts.
- Similar condition. A comp for a pristine, boxed item does not apply to your scratched, box-less one. You'll adjust for that below.
Get those two right and your prices stop being opinions and start being evidence.
How to find comps in a few minutes
You don't need to research every 50¢ mug — but for anything you think might be worth real money ($15+), spend two minutes checking:
- eBay — filter to "Sold items." Search the item, open the filters, and tick Sold/Completed. This is the best free window into real resale value for tools, electronics, brand-name goods, and collectibles. Look at the range of recent sold prices, not the one outlier.
- Facebook Marketplace and local buy/sell groups. These show what your local market pays, and how long things linger. Local demand can differ a lot from national eBay averages.
- Your own past sales. If you've held a sale before, you already know what your neighborhood pays for paperbacks or a coffee maker. That's a comp too.
The goal isn't a perfect number — it's to replace a wild guess with a grounded one.
Adjusting for condition
A comp is your starting point; condition is the discount you apply to it. Be honest and specific:
- Like-new / boxed: close to the comp.
- Good, complete, clean: a step down.
- Worn, missing a part, no box, needs cleaning: a large step down — often half or less.
- Broken / for parts: near zero. Mark it "as-is, for parts" and price it to move.
The most common pricing mistake is comparing your average item to a comp set by a mint one. Match like to like.
Then price at garage-sale reality
Even a fair comp gets discounted at a yard sale, because shoppers show up expecting bargains. As a rough rule of thumb, ordinary used goods sell for roughly 10–30% of their original retail price, depending on condition and demand. Comps tell you where a specific item lands inside — or occasionally above — that band. Genuinely sought-after or hard-to-find items (name-brand power tools, vintage cast iron, collectibles) can command more, which is exactly why you comp them instead of slapping a quarter on them.
Quick category price ranges
Use these as fast defaults for the ordinary stuff, then comp anything that might be special:
- Paperback books: 25–50¢ each, or "3 for $1." Hardcovers $1–2.
- Adult clothing: $1–3 for ordinary items; more for coats, boots, or name brands in great shape.
- Kids' clothing: 50¢–$2; bundle by size in a bag or bin.
- Kitchen items: 50¢–$5 for mugs, utensils, and small gear; small appliances $3–15 by condition.
- Furniture: the widest range — a wobbly end table is $5, a solid dresser $30–75+. Comp the good pieces.
- Tools: hold value well — comp brand-name and power tools specifically; they're what early birds hunt.
- Electronics: comp everything current; price dead/obsolete gear near nothing.
- Toys: 50¢–$3; complete sets and popular brands more.
Tactics that make items move
- Round, simple numbers (25¢, 50¢, $1, $2, $5) — they speed up your line and spare everyone from hunting for change.
- Price everything. Unpriced items make people ask, and many would rather walk than ask.
- Bundle the small stuff — "fill a bag for $5," "paperbacks 3 for $1." Volume beats squeezing a dime out of each trinket.
- Leave a little haggle room. Set your tag slightly above your true floor so you can say "sure, take it for X" and both of you feel good. (Expect to get more flexible as the day winds down.)
